About Family Medicine
Medical doctors who specialize in family medicine (FM) are concerned with a person’s comprehensive health care needs. A family physician is often a primary care doctor providing continuing health care for an individual or family. In the U.S., family physicians hold either a Medical Doctor degree or a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine degree. Family medicine doctors must also complete a minimum 3 year residency program in addition to earning their medical degree and many also do additional testing to become board certified. The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) requires those physicians which it certifies to undergo regular continuing medical education courses and re-certifications every seven years. Family physicians diagnose and treat a broad range of illnesses and provide preventive medical care services.
